West Virginia Nursing Schools and Programs

West Virginia is known as the "Mountain" state and has amazing, yet hidden scenery and natural beauty. The fire flies in the spring make the Blue Ridge Parkway glitter like fairy dust. In the midst of the Appalachian Mountains, there is no end to the exciting adventures ranging from rafting and climbing in the spring and summer, to fall hunting and fishing, to winter snow tubing and skiing. West Virginia has its own historic local language that coincides with the historical logging and coal mining towns. As a nursing student in West Virginia you will be able to getaway anytime to experience the natural beauty of the state.

West Virginia offers numerous opportunities to obtain a nursing education, from certificates and diplomas to a doctoral degree at West Virginia University in Morgantown. We will help you find the program to best suit your needs and meet your goals. As of right now, West Virginia is experiencing a severe nursing shortage. In the 2009 legislative session, a bill has been introduced that would subsidize PhD education for the purposes of teaching nurses. Another bill has been introduced that would provide for loan forgiveness for those going to nursing school. One example is the state nursing homes are reporting vacancy rates for nurses as high as 18 percent and turnover rates for nurses nearing 30 percent. Hospitals are experiencing similar nursing vacancies. The state in conjunction with hospitals and nursing associations are encouraging registered nurses to return to school to get their BSN or MSN. Online nursing programs in West Virginia help ease the waitlist by providing top notch curriculum for nursing students. The state needs more nurse educators to work as nursing faculty in order to accept and graduate more nurses each year (must have an MSN to teach in West Virginia). As you can see, there are important factors to consider when deciding which program to choose!
