Mississippi Nursing Schools and Programs
Mississippi's rich culture and charm of the old southern heritage can be found in the state's museums, historical homes, Civil War sites and landmarks. The locals are the epitome of southern hospitality. The heart of the Civil Rights Movement and Mississippi's contributions to food, literature, fine arts and crafts is what makes the state so interesting. Mississippi offers plenty of recreational opportunities, especially along the Biloxi Bay and Biloxi Channel.
Mississippi, a state hit hard by Hurricane Katrina in 2005, provides a variety of educational opportunities for nursing students. People left the area due to crisis and many did not return. Over the last decade Mississippi healthcare has witnessed a number of statewide trends in nursing: loss in nurse educators and a decline in the number of students entering the field. There are plenty of job opportunities for nurses and Mississippi has a plan that focuses on more scholarships, recruiting, and retention. To magnetize Mississippi's nursing programs, the state has implemented incentive programs; special loans, scholarships with post grad work contract, and loan forgiveness programs.
Due to the rapidly expanding and evolving nature of the health care system, careers in nursing are expected to continue to grow significantly each year. Registered nurses are predicted to have a 36% increase in openings through 2012. Mississippi has many nursing programs to choose from which are all very friendly to your specific needs. Four-year colleges and universities offer comprehensive nursing programs; while technical schools and community colleges can help you get specific certifications. In addition, the role of the professional nurse is expanding to include an emphasis on leadership, management, and education. Many programs require students to complete clinical studies, either at the university's public clinic or at area clinics, hospitals, and other resident care centers. This valuable experience will help prepare nursing students and gives them important networking opportunities.
Nurses in hospitals, community health centers, group practices, long term care facilities, and elsewhere in the health care community, are being called upon to lead and manage departments within their organizations. In addition, they are being asked to as become educators, not only for the patients, but for the future nurses of their communities. For those interested in pursuing or advancing a career in the field of nursing, this is an excellent time. Many universities offer weekend, evening, online and campus based programs. Online nursing programs have become increasingly popular over the past several years. They are meant to provide a convenient and flexible option for working registered nurses or other health care professionals. Most schools allow you to complete coursework at your own pace. Browse a wide variety of accredited nursing schools to learn more about the exciting and rewarding career opportunities that await you.
